The topic "Growing Up Adopted" will discussed at our January forum. Ann McKinnon, also known as Cho Cha Hye, will share her story. Ann was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1977, and was adopted at the age of four months. Raised in a semi-rural town of 10,000 people in Minnesota , Ann's modest, working-class family consisted of two parents and a younger disabled brother who was not adopted. Though there were two other Korean adoptees in her small town, Ann never talked about being adopted with people outside her family until college. It was during college that she first met non-adopted Korean-Americans, took an interest in Korean culture and traveled to Korea. That trip in 1998, a summer semester study abroad program, marked a major turning point in Ann's life and identity formation. After learning her American adoption records were falsified, Ann eventually found her birth family. Ann has now been in reunion for three years and has learned what many adoptees learn after meeting members of their birth families: that reunion is not necessarily an end, but a beginning full of complex issues, questions and uncertainty. Ann is the first member of her immediate family to graduate from college and holds a degree in Sociology. She has been a board member of Also-Known-As since 2005 and is currently the organization's Vice President.
